Portland, and back home again!

I wasn't the Best Little Boy in the World... but I came in second! haha. Growing up in then semi rural West Linn, Oregon, my claim to fame was that I could do one thing best... draw. Throughout high school, college and the army, I was always known as "the artist". My career began during my assignment as an army combat photographer/artist in Viet Nam. Anyway, I got out alive (obviously).

Ah, but I was rewarded for my suffering. My next assignment was in the heart of Europe. I fell in love with Frankfurt, and the whole continent immediately. What a deal! I worked as a graphic artist during the week, and traveled to every corner of Europe on the weekends. I got a night job with an American advertising agency in Frankfurt... where I took a civilian job after leaving Uncle Sam's service. Life was perfect. My job involved lots of travel around Europe where I met so many great people.

Well, There's this big question always looming... Should you stick with the sure thing or take the risk of something bigger and better? (I don't mean the stock market, haha.) Well, I opted for the bigger deal and took a great job with UNESCO. (United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organization). Sounds great, huh? Well guess where my first assignment was? Viet Nam! Yeah.

1975 ... No, I didn't leave off the roof of the US embassy. Off the roof at Than Sohn Nhut airport ... but that's another story...

The next two years were spent in Manila. where i worked as an illustrator. I spent most of the time there trying to wangle my real desired assignment (and I got it). Hong Kong.

If you haven't been there perhaps you couldn't appreciate the excitement. Everything was right; even perfect ... and years melted away. But one day I became restless and decided to make a change. No matter how appealing the situation, change is more so to me. When it became absolutely clear and unquestionable that HK was going to cease to be British and be under Beijing... I began to plot my exit.

You have to get this... I love extremes. Now, what is more different from Hong Kong, with the world's highest population density? Well, Virginia City, Nevada. Population 700. Now that's an extreme, I'll tell ya. It was like jumping off a fast train and hitting the ground!

I bought the local newspaper, the historic Territorial Enterprise. Samuel Clemens got his start here and for the first time used the moniker Mark Twain. Since then, I have published it in various forms and have established a 501(C)3. Meanwhile, I moved up to Lake Tahoe, opened an art gallery, (makes some sense, huh?) and enjoyed extreme snow... The real problem with that is that sooner or later there is no place to plow 10 feet of snow out of the parking lot, and that has an adverse effect on sales. No kidding.

Then, full circle, I have come back to this wonderful place called Oregon. Currently i'm involved in various art projects including some decor art as well as some illustrating and cartooning.

Here are some links to some of my art:  pen and ink, acrylic, oils, and cartoons.
